Day 1 · Free · Open source
The free writing checker that stays on your device
Unsubbed Clarity is a free, open-source writing checker that runs in your browser. Paste your writing and it marks rambling sentences, weak words and fancy words, then shows a reading level. Price: $0, with no account and no paid tier.
What Clarity flags
Clarity checks four things as you type: sentences that ramble, sentences that are heavy, soft spots like adverbs, passive voice and hedges, and fancy words with a plainer swap. Each kind gets its own color and underline style, so the marks stay readable in grayscale and for colorblind writers.
Tangled sentences
Very long sentences get a strong tint and a solid line. Split them in two or three.
Heavy sentences
Long-but-fixable sentences get a pale tint and a dotted line. Trim a clause.
Soft spots
-ly words, passive voice and hedges like "perhaps" get a wavy line.
Plainer swaps
Words like "commence" get a double line and a tip with a simpler word.

Clarity questions
Is there a free alternative to Hemingway Editor?
Yes. Unsubbed Clarity is a free, open-source writing checker that runs in your browser. It marks long and very long sentences, adverbs, passive voice, hedging words, and words with a plainer swap, and it shows a reading level. It needs no account and is not affiliated with Hemingway Editor.
Does Clarity upload my writing anywhere?
No. Clarity runs entirely in your browser and makes no network requests after the page loads. Your text is kept only in your browser's storage on your own device, and you can save it to a file or clear it at any time from Settings. There is no account and no analytics.
Can I use Clarity offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded, Clarity keeps working without an internet connection, because all of the checking happens on your device. You can also download the code from GitHub and open it on your own computer with any simple local web server.
How does Clarity calculate the reading level?
Clarity uses the Automated Readability Index, a public formula from 1967 that combines average word length and average sentence length into a school grade. You choose who you're writing for in Settings, and Clarity marks sentences that run longer than that audience reads comfortably.
